How to Make Underwear

Are you tired of spending an arm and a leg on underwear at department stores? I know I am. So why don’t you make your own? In this article, we will show you how to make underwear.

Things you’ll need:

1. Stretch fabric

2. Scissors

3. A pair of underwear that fits you well

4. Paper to trace (I’m using wrapping paper)

5. Matching thread

6. Stretch lace or lingerie elastic

7. Fabric chalk (optional)

8. Pen or pencil

Step One: Take the pair of underwear that you want to replicate the fit of, and lay it on your tracing paper. You’ll need to trace the back, and the front of the underwear separately. It may be a bit tricky to trace the front of the underwear. Tuck the bottom up underneath it as much as you can while you trace.

Step Two: Once you’re done tracing each side of the underwear, it’s time to add on your seam allowance.

I added 3/8 of an inch seam allowance on each side, and on the crotch. If you plan to hem the leg holes instead of finishing the edges with stretch lace or lingerie elastic, add on a seam allowance to the leg holes as well. Add about 1/2 an inch allowance to the top of the underwear. Cut out each piece.

Step Three: Fold your pieces directly down the middle and even up any irregularities.

That way your underwear will be perfectly symmetrical and even. Do this with each piece, and then match them up to see if they make an even pair of undies.

Now you’re ready to cut out your fabric pieces!

On the fold, making sure your stretch fabric stretches from side to side rather than up and down (so that you can stretch the underwear to get it on your body), pin your pattern pieces to the fabric and trace with fabric chalk, or follow the pattern as you cut.

Step Four: Pin the pieces together, right sides together, and sew each side and the crotch seams together, using a zigzag stitch.

Now grab your stretch lace or lingerie elastic. Measure how much you’ll need for each leg hole and the top of your underwear. Be generous with these measurements, and give yourself an extra inch or two. Pin the elastic or lace face down along the edges of the waist and leg holes.

Sew close to the edge using a zigzag stitch all around the waist and leg holes, and cut off the excess elastic.

Step Five: Now what you’re going to do is take the edges that you just stitched, and flip it over to that the lace peaks out from underneath the underwear. Top stitch this in place. It should look like this when you are done:

Now, you can either add lace or elastic to both the leg holes and the waist, or you can hem the leg holes.

And that’s all there is to it! Now you know hot to make underwear. Be creative with your shapes, and your fabric, and you’ll never need to buy a department store pair of undies again!
