I decided to dabble in jewelry this week, and as you may know if you’ve been following this blog for a while now, I am a huge fan of Steampunk! Now, for those of you who aren’t familiar with what Steampunk is, one definition is, “a genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology.” In my own words, you’ll find lots of Victorian-inspired clothing, such as corsets and top hats, and airships, mechanized monsters, and lots and lots of gears….
Speaking of which…
Now, to be completely honest, I was at a loss for what to make. But after staring at my pile of gears I picked up from Michaels, I finally had an, aha! moment and decided to whip up some fancy gear earrings. As you can see, they were relatively simple to make. All I needed to do was arrange the gears in such a way that they looked like they belonged together. And I must say, I think these are rather cute!
My favorite thing to do when making jewelry inspired by Steampunk is mix and match different color metals. I feel it gives it something extra, and more dimension. I have plenty more gear charms in my collection so I plan on making more of these in different shapes and sizes.
I don’t plan on adding these earrings to the Etsy shop, but don’t worry – I have plenty of Steampunk-inspired jewelry and clothing planned for future sale! If you’re interested in seeing a Steampunk necklace I created, check it out here.
Now, if you’re interested in learning more about Steampunk, here’s a list of media I recommend to help get a jump start on it:
1. “A Red Sun Also Rises” by Mark Hodder
2. “Boneshaker” by Cherie Priest
3. The film, “The Time Machine” (2002)
4. The film, “Around the World in 80 Days” (2004)
Let me know what you thought of these earrings in the comments below!
